- FOX and Burger King have apologized for a cartoon making fun of singer Jessica Simpson. In the cartoon, which aired during last week’s FOX NFL Sunday, several animated Dallas Cowboys made fun of Simpson’s weight. One character noted that “she blew up bigger than Flozell Adams,” and a cartoon version of coach Wade Phillips asked if Simpson was around, because the team “could use a defensive tackle!” FOX, in a statement: “[O]ur poor attempt at humor was insensitive, and we deeply apologize to anyone who might have been offended.” (Dallas Morning News)
- From the comfort of ESPN’s Bristol, CT, studios, ESPN baseball analysts will get a chance to swing at real-life pitches thrown during MLB postseason games. Using “data generated from ballparks,” ESPN will “create replays of actual pitches that can be superimposed onscreen” during the network’s studio programs. ESPN will have flexibility with the virtual pitches, as its analysts will be able to “order them to be frozen in mid-flight and … walk in front of them.” (USA Today)
- For the first time, HBO’s 24/7 documentary series will expand its focus beyond boxing. NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson will be the next focus of the reality series, which has previously “followed boxers as they prepared for an upcoming fight.” The Johnson edition, set to begin on January 26, will follow the three-time Sprint Cup champion as he gets ready for the ’10 Daytona 500.
