With the 2010 FIFA World Cup on pace to finish as the most-viewed ever on ESPN/ABC, it is no surprise the event concluded with another strong performance.
The match portion of Sunday’s Spain/Netherlands World Cup Final drew a 9.9 overnight rating on ABC Sunday afternoon, tied with USA/Ghana on June 26 as the highest of the World Cup on ESPN/ABC.
Overnight ratings for the match window of previous World Cup finals were not available.
Including pre-match coverage, the telecast drew an 8.6 overnight — even with Italy/France in 2006 (8.6), up 110% from Brazil/Germany in 2002 (4.1) and up 25% from France/Brazil in ’98 (6.9).
The 8.6 overnight for Italy/France is for the 1:30-5 PM ET timeslot, and the match began at 18:00 GMT (2:00 PM ET) — indicating a half-hour pre-match.
To put the numbers in perspective, the 9.9 overnight for the match portion on ABC tops the much hyped USA/England match on June 13 (9.0), every game of the 2010 Stanley Cup Final, including Game 6 (5.8), and three of the five 2010 BCS bowl games.
However, the 9.9 for the ABC telecast trails every game of the 2010 NBA Finals, every game of the 2009 World Series, the final round of The Masters (12.0), and the NCAA Tournament National Championship Game (16.0).
Keep in mind the match also aired on Univision.
