Perhaps it was the presence of Manchester United or leftover hype from the World Cup, but the 2010 MLS All-Star Game had a significant rise in viewership.

Manchester United’s 5-2 win over the MLS All-Stars in the MLS All-Star Game drew a 0.44 U.S. rating and 714,000 viewers on ESPN2 Wednesday night, up 57% and 48%, respectively, from last year (0.28, 484,000) and up 10% in ratings from 2008 (0.40, viewership unavailable).

The 714,000 viewers tops the ESPN2 regular season average of 251,000 (through 14 telecasts) by 185%.

To put the numbers in perspective, the MLS All-Star Game topped the recent WNBA All-Star Game (0.34, 429,000) and every game of last year’s WNBA Finals. Additionally, the telecast drew more viewers than every IndyCar telecast ever on Versus and every regular season NHL telecast on Versus during the 2009-10 season.

Is the Spanish-language (Galavision) viewership available yet? With Chicharito playing his first game in red, it ought to be a pretty sizable number.

why didn’t you compare it to other all star games?

Versus must have had some bad match-ups for their NHL last season for the MLS All-Star game to win the ratings. I watched the first goals scored vs ‘our’ MLS and realized it was mostly the ManU training squad…how embarrassing is that?

  • Tdjakes

The Man U “training squad”? Macheda who scored the first goal is worth 50 million on the transfer market. Danny Welbeck probably somewhere close. Man U has no salary cap. No roster limits. They are the Yankees on steroids. Their 3rd best 11 would probably win any non Big 4 Euro league regular season.

Also Kansas City’s first team beat Man U a few days prior. An all-star team has had no time to practice together, Donovan and Buddle even played the day before. Just like KC’s win doesn’t mean much, neither does the All-Stars loss.

For all the talk about parity in the NFL, it should be pointed out that the league’s recent ratings success can be attributed to marquee franchises, star players, and big markets — the same mix on which Major League Baseball and the NBA are criticized for relying. The game has added approximately fifteen million viewers between 2005 and 2011, with viewership rising in each successive season. While some [...]
