The Ratings Game

Recent sports TV ratings news, including the Women’s British Open, MLB on ESPN and TBS and ratings for the MLS All-Star Game in San Diego.

  • Final round coverage of the Women’s British Open drew 747,000 viewers on ESPN last Sunday morning, down 25% from last year’s final round on ABC (997,000), but down only 5% from 2008 (787,000). A taped one-hour replay of the final round drew 574,000 viewers on ABC later in the day. (Son Of The Bronx, Sports Business Daily)
  • ESPN drew a 1.5 U.S. rating and 2.278 million viewers for Dodgers/Giants last Sunday night, down a tick in ratings but up slightly in viewership from Dodgers/Braves last year (1.6, 2.256 mil). Earlier in the day, TBS drew 820,000 viewers for a Yankees/Rays telecast that was blacked out in New York and Tampa-St. Petersburg. (Sports Business Daily, Son Of The Bronx)
  • San Diego, the top market for all four United States World Cup matches on ESPN/ABC, averaged only a 0.14 rating for the recent MLS All-Star Game — ranking #48 out of the 56 metered markets. (signonsandiego.com)
