Overnight ratings jumped by over 40% for the latest edition of Saturday Night Football, due mostly to last year’s game setting the bar very low.
Regional college football action featuring Florida State/Miami drew a 3.8 overnight rating on ABC Saturday night, up 41% from last year (MICH/IOWA: 2.7), but down 21% from 2008 (OSU/WISC*: 4.8).
Keep in mind last year’s game — which aired opposite Florida/LSU on CBS — drew the second-lowest overnight in the history of Saturday Night Football.
This marks the fourth time in five games that ABC has drawn less than a 4.0 overnight for Saturday Night Football. To put that in perspective, just two telecasts dipped below 4.0 all of last season (12 telecasts).
Earlier in the day, regional action featuring Michigan State/Michigan drew a 3.4 overnight, down 24% from last year (WISC/OSU*: 4.5) and down 6% from 2008 (FSU/MIA*: 3.6).
Both telecasts were outdrawn by Saturday afternoon’s Alabama/South Carolina game on CBS (5.2).
