The final game of the National League Championship Series trailed last year’s Game 6 on FOX, but still earned strong numbers.
Game 6 of the Giants/Phillies NLCS drew a 6.7 final rating and 11.6 million viewers on FOX Saturday night*, down 28% in ratings and 25% in viewership from Game 6 of last year’s ALCS on FOX (LAA/NYY: 9.3, 15.481 mil), and down 2% and up 4%, respectively, from Game 6 of the 2007 ALCS on FOX (CLE/BOS: 6.8, 11.153 mil).
The last Game 6 in the NLCS (Cardinals/Mets in 2006) drew an 8.0 rating and 11.666 million viewers on FOX.
The Giants’ series-clinching win drew the most viewers for any NLCS telecast since Game 7 of the aforementioned 2006 Cardinals/Mets series (16.528 mil), topping the previous four-year high set by Thursday’s Game 5 (11.196 mil).
This marks the third straight game of the Giants/Phillies series to hit a four-year NLCS high in viewership.
Saturday’s game ranks as the second-most viewed of the postseason, trailing Friday’s Yankees/Rangers ALCS Game 6 on TBS (11.863 mil).
Philadelphia was the top market for Game 6, with a 33.4 rating — up 6% from Game 5 (31.4). To put that in perspective, the market’s highest rating for last year’s Phillies/Dodgers NLCS was a 37.0 for the Phillies’ series-clinching Game 5 win.
In the Bay Area, the game drew a 28.9 rating, up 1% from Game 5 (28.5), and the highest rating for an MLB telecast in the market since the Giants’ last trip to the World Series. The last time the Giants clinched a trip to the World Series (Game 5 of the 2002 NLCS), the game drew a 27.1 rating in the market.
Overall, FOX averaged a 5.5 rating and 9.05 million viewers for the Giants/Phillies NLCS, down 15% in ratings and 12% in viewership from last year’s Yankees/Angels ALCS on the network (6.5, 10.3 mil). Though down from last year, the 5.5 average rating tops the 2008 NLCS on FOX (4.8) by 15%.
The entire MLB League Championship Series (AL and NL) averaged 8.60 million viewers across FOX and TBS, up 2% from last year (8.43 mil), and the highest average since 2007.
