Lacking the drama of a #1 vs. #2 matchup and the drawing power of previous combatants Alabama and Florida, Saturday’s Auburn/South Carolina SEC Championship Game plunged in the overnights.
Auburn’s win over South Carolina drew a 6.3 overnight rating on CBS Saturday, down 47% from last year (ALA/UF: 11.8), and down 39% from 2008 (UF/ALA: 10.4).
The 2009 and 2008 SEC title games pitted Alabama against Florida, with the teams ranking #1 and #2 in the nation both times.
This marks the lowest overnight for the SEC Championship Game since 2007 (LSU/TEN: 6.0). That said, the 6.3 also ranks as the third-highest for the title game since 2001.
Despite the decline, Saturday’s telecast drew the third-highest overnight of the season for college football on any network, behind only Boise State/Virginia Tech on ESPN Labor Day (6.8) and Auburn/Alabama on CBS Black Friday (7.5).
