The Ratings Game: In Second Outing, Onion SportsDome Earns Fewer Viewers

Recent sports TV ratings news, including increases for college basketball on CBS, mixed numbers for the NBA on TNT, and declines for episode two of Onion SportsDome on Comedy Central.

  • CBS drew a 1.0 final rating and 1.436 million viewers for Maryland/Villanova last Saturday afternoon, up 67% in ratings and 94% in viewership from last year (ILL/MSU: 0.6, 742K). Last year’s game faced NFL competition on FOX; this year’s game did not. On Sunday, Purdue/West Virginia drew a 0.6 and 976,000 viewers, flat in ratings and up 24% in viewership from last year (CONN/MICH: 0.6, 790K).   • Thursday’s Mavericks/Bulls NBA game on TNT earned a 1.2 U.S. rating and 1.900 million viewers, down 52% in ratings and viewership from last year (LAL/CLE: 2.5, 3.946 mil). Last year’s game pitted the Lakers’ Kobe Bryant against then-Cavalier LeBron James. In the nightcap, Clippers/Trail Blazers drew a 1.1 and 1.633 million, up 10% and 8%, respectively, from last year (LAC/DEN: 1.0, 1.508 mil). (TV By the Numbers)
  • The second edition of Onion SportsDome earned a 0.8 U.S. rating and 1.182 million viewers on Comedy Central Tuesday night, down a tick in ratings and 22% in viewership from the series premiere one week earlier (0.9, 1.520 mil). Tuesday’s episode had declines in both the adults 18-49 demographic (0.7, down 22%) and the key men 18-34 demo (1.3, down 32%). (pifeedback.com)
