The latest edition of the NBA Sunday Showcase was not even the showcase game of the day, but the numbers were still up from last year.
ABC earned a 2.9 overnight rating for the Lakers’ win over the Thunder on Sunday, up 16% from last year’s comparable game, which aired in a later timeslot (DEN/LAL: 2.5), but down 24% from 2009 (LAL/PHX: 3.8).
The 2.9 is the second-lowest of the season for an NBA game on ABC, ahead of only Magic/Celtics on Super Bowl Sunday (2.8). To put that in perspective, at the comparable point last season, six telecasts had drawn less than a 2.8 overnight.
In a rarity, ABC’s game was not the top NBA telecast of the day. ESPN earned a 3.3 overnight for Knicks/Heat in primetime.
