With Sidney Crosby still sidelined and facing competition from the NCAA Tournament, overnight ratings for the NHL on NBC hit a season-low Sunday.
NBC earned a 0.7 overnight rating for the Rangers’ win over the Penguins Sunday afternoon, even with last year (NYR/BOS: 0.7), and down 30% from 2009 (PHI/PIT: 1.0).
The 0.7 overnight is the lowest of the season for an NHL telecast on NBC, and is tied as the lowest overall since Red Wings/Blackhawks in 2009 (0.6).
Of note, last year’s Rangers/Bruins game finished with a 0.5 final rating, tied as the lowest for an NHL telecast on NBC since the network reacquired rights to the league.
For some perspective, Rangers/Penguins was nearly doubled by Sunday’s coverage of the Indian Wells tennis tournament on ABC (1.3).
