The 2010-11 NHL regular season on NBC was highlighted by a pair of viewership milestones.
NBC averaged 1.6 million viewers for 11 regular season NHL telecasts during the 2010-11 season. The network was boosted both by the NHL Winter Classic and by Hockey Day in America.
As is customary, the Winter Classic was NBC’s top broadcast of the year. The game’s 4.5 million viewers ranks as the largest audience for a regular season NHL game since 1975.
Meanwhile, the debut of Hockey Day in America scored for NBC as well. The network’s Penguins/Blackhawks game — the second half of a rare doubleheader — earned 1.9 million viewers, the best for any non-Winter Classic game in over five years.
The news was not always good this season. Several games drew less than 1% of U.S. TV homes, including Rangers/Flyers on April 3 — which drew a mere 0.7 final rating and 999,000 viewers.
