Stanley Cup Final: Big Drop For Game 2

Posted by | 06/05/2011 at 3:38 pm

On the lowest rated night of the week, the second game of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final suffered a substantial decline in overnight ratings.

Game 2 of the Bruins/Canucks series earned a 2.5 overnight rating on NBC Saturday night, down 39% from last year (PHI/CHI G2: 4.1), and down 26% from 2009 (PIT/DET G2: 3.4).

Last year’s Flyers/Blackhawks Game 2 aired on Memorial Day. Penguins/Red Wings Game 2 in 2009 aired on a Sunday night.

The 2.5 overnight also marks a 21% decline from Game 1 of the series on Wednesday night (3.2).

Game 2 drew a 21.9 rating in Boston. Game 2 of last year’s Lakers/Celtics NBA Finals, which aired on a Sunday night, drew a 23.9 in the market.

Providence, RI (11.1), Buffalo (6.6), Hartford (3.8) and Seattle (3.2) rounded out the top five.

Wow, those #s are horrid. Why not schedule this game on Friday night instead? And with game 3 and 4 on Versus, I doubt the #s get any better.

The NHL should insist that all of the Stanley Cup Finals games be on NBC. Versus is not available in tens of millions of homes nationwide, and many others have it available only by subscribing to “digital” cable or a special sports tier, shutting many hockey fans out of the game
