Copa America: Substantial Declines For Final Matches


Ratings and viewership declined sharply for the final week of the 2011 Copa America soccer tournament.

The Uruguay/Paraguay Copa America final earned a 1.2 final rating and 2.251 million viewers on Univision Sunday afternoon, down 46% in ratings and 50% in viewership from 2007 (BRA/ARG: 2.2, 4.454M).

The semifinal matches earned better numbers than Sunday’s final, although both were down from 2007.

The July 20 Paraguay/Venezuela semifinal earned a 1.5 and 2.869 million viewers, down 53% in ratings and 59% in viewership from 2007 (MEX/ARG: 3.2, 6.911M).

One day earlier, the Uruguay/Peru semifinal drew a 1.4 and 2.665 million, down 13% and 9%, respectively, from the 2007 match on Telefutura (BRA/URU: 1.6, 2.916M).

Saturday’s third place game was also down substantially from 2007. The Peru/Venezuela match earned a 0.4 and 805,000 viewers on Telefutura, down 64% and 59%, respectively, from 2007 (MEX/URU: 1.1, 1.962M).
