Ratings for the waterlogged Rangers/Tigers American League Championship Series are flat compared to last year, helped by a solid boost for Tuesday’s Game 3.
The Tigers’ Game 3 win over the Rangers earned a 5.3 final rating and 8.390 million viewers on FOX Tuesday night, up 61% in ratings and 67% in viewership from Game 3 of last year’s NLCS on FOX (PHI/SF: 3.3, 5.040M), and up 10% and 16%, respectively, from 2009 (NYY/LAA: 4.8, 7.247M).
Keep in mind the 2010 and 2009 games both aired on weekday afternoons. Compared to Game 3 of last year’s ALCS (NYY/TEX: 5.2, 8.214M), which aired in primetime on TBS, Tuesday’s game was up 2% in ratings and viewership.
Game 3 earned the largest audience of the League Championship Series.
On Monday, the delayed Game 2 of the series earned a 4.2 final rating and 6.568 million viewers on FOX, down 21% in ratings and 26% in viewership from Game 2 of last year’s NLCS on FOX (SF/PHI: 5.3, 8.835M), and 28% and 30%, respectively, from 2009 (LAA/NYY: 5.8, 9.379M).
Keep in mind both the 2010 and 2009 games aired on Sunday nights with NFL lead-ins. Compared to last year’s ALCS Game 2 on TBS (NYY/TEX: 3.6, 5.831M), which aired on a Saturday afternoon, Monday’s game was actually up 17% and 13%, respectively.
Game 2 preempted portions of the FOX primetime schedule. From 8:00-8:30 PM, the last full half-hour of the game, FOX averaged a 6.3 rating, 10.474 million viewers and a 3.2 rating among adults 18-49 — better numbers than Terra Nova or House would achieve the rest of the night.
Saturday’s rain-drenched Game 1 of the series drew a 3.5 and 5.770 million viewers, down 17% in ratings and 19% in viewership from Game 1 of last year’s NLCS on FOX (SF/PHI: 4.2, 7.126M), and down 33% and 32%, respectively, from Game 1 of the 2009 ALCS on FOX (LAA/NYY: 5.2, 8.439M).
Compared to Game 1 of last year’s ALCS on TBS (NYY/TEX: 5.0, 8.111M), which aired on a Friday night, the game was down 30% in ratings and viewership.
Through three games, the ALCS on FOX has averaged a 4.3 rating, flat compared to the first three games of last year’s NLCS on FOX (SF/PHI: 4.3).
