BCS: Rose Bowl Earns 9.9 Overnight, Lowest in Years

Overnight ratings for the Rose Bowl fell double-digits on ESPN.

Monday’s #10 Wisconsin/#5 Oregon Rose Bowl earned a 9.9 overnight rating on ESPN, down 15% from last year (TCU/WISC: 11.7), and down 28% from 2010 (OSU/ORE: 13.8, ABC).

The 9.9 overnight is the lowest for the Rose Bowl since at least 2001 (overnights prior to 2002 were not available).

Over the past ten years, final ratings for the Rose Bowl have declined between 1% and 8% from the overnight, putting Monday’s game on pace to finish in the 9.1-9.8 range. The lowest Rose Bowl rating ever was a 10.8 for the 1989 game.

The Rose Bowl drew a 34.7 rating in Milwaukee and a 29.7 in Portland (OR), both local records for a bowl game on ESPN.

Could be due to the Jan 2 date for the traditional New Years Day slot

Not sure about that. The last time the New Year’s Day bowls aired on January 2, the Fiesta Bowl (in the Rose Bowl timeslot) earned a 13.6 overnight. Of course, that was Ohio State/Notre Dame.

Serves you right for taking it off ABC and putting it on cable.
