Recent sports TV ratings notes, including overnight ratings for Sunday’s live English Premier League match on FOX, an increase for the Capitals/Penguins NHL game on NBC, and a viewership record for Lakers/Clippers on NBA TV.

  • FOX Earns 0.9 Overnight For First Live EPL Match: Sunday’s Manchester United/Arsenal English Premier League match, the first ever live EPL telecast on U.S. broadcast television, earned a 0.9 overnight rating on FOX — lower than the overnights for the network’s previous three EPL telecasts this season, which each aired in the afternoon on tape delay. • NBC’s Caps/Pens Up Slightly From Last Year: NBC earned a 1.1 overnight rating for the Capitals/Penguins NHL regular season game on Sunday, up a tick from last year (PHI/CHI: 1.0), but down 15% from 2010 (PIT/PHI: 1.3). (Sports Business Daily)
  • NBA TV Earns Largest Ever Regular Season Audience: The January 14 Lakers/Clippers NBA regular season game drew 756,000 viewers on NBA TV, the largest audience ever for a regular season NBA game on the network. Keep in mind NBA TV has only been a Nielsen-rated network for two seasons. As of last Tuesday, regular season viewership on NBA TV was up 68% from last year. (Turner Sports)

Not that I expect live EPL matches to light the country on fire just yet, but is it me or was ManU/Arsenal underpromoted? It seemed as if FOX was more apt to hustle American Idol during the NFL playoffs than this match. And their upcoming UFC card could have gotten a little more burn, too.
