Heat/Thunder Ties Season-High in Overnight Ratings For ESPN

Even with college basketball dominating the calendar, ESPN managed to attract a season-high overnight rating for Sunday’s game between the Heat and Thunder.

The Heat/Thunder NBA regular season game drew a 2.4 overnight rating on ESPN Sunday night, tied as the highest NBA overnight of the lockout-shortened season on ESPN.

Later in the night, Grizzlies/Lakers drew a 2.0 overnight.

For some perspective, the last time ABC aired an NBA game opposite the NCAA Tournament (2009: DAL/CLE), the game drew a 2.2 overnight rating.

That’s good news for the NBA, Since pretty much Heat vs Thunder is a possible finals matchup between the two teams. If it happens, these two teams meet in the Finals. I do think the ratings will be the same as the 2011 NBA Finals ratings in the 9.0′-10.0’s in the first 4-5 games, Then a possible game 6 or 7 would be a little higher.

With all due respect to College Basketball, They have a 0% effect on any NBA ratings. College Basketball will draw big numbers next monday for the Champonship game that’s the only night I think NBA ratings will take ANY effect on the NBA ratings. This season has been so fast because of the lockout, we are 4 weeks from the NBA season ending (exactly). Paulsen NBA Playoff games times will be released in a couple weeks right?
