The much-maligned NFL Pro Bowl, the most-viewed All Star game in any of the four major sports over the past two years, could be headed for cancellation.
ESPN.com reported Thursday that the NFL will likely cancel the 2013 Pro Bowl and may discontinue the game altogether. The Pro Bowl was the most-viewed All-Star game in professional sports in both 2010 and 2011, but the exhibition generally earns below-average numbers when compared to NFL regular season games.
NBC is currently slated to air the 2013 Pro Bowl. The game was originally going to air CBS, but the network — for the second time in this television contract — passed up the opportunity.
Starting in 2014, the Pro Bowl would air on ESPN each year as part of the NFL’s new television deal.
