In a bit of a black eye for the NHL, Game 1 of the Kings/Devils Stanley Cup Final was not even the highest rated sporting event of the night in the teams’ home markets.
According to USA Today, Game 1 of the Kings/Devils Stanley Cup Final was outdrawn by Game 2 of the Celtics/Heat NBA Eastern Conference Finals in both New York (7.4 to 5.1) and Los Angeles (6.1 to 4.2).
Keep in mind Kings/Devils aired on broadcast television (NBC) and Celtics/Heat aired on cable (ESPN).
Amazingly, Game 1 attracted fewer homes in New York and Los Angeles combined (appx. 611K) than Game 1 of last year’s series earned in Boston alone (appx. 627K).
