Viewership more than doubled for the first three days of the Euro 2012 soccer tournament.

Through Sunday, ESPN averaged a 0.9 U.S. rating and 1.328 million viewers for coverage of the Euro 2012 tournament, up 200% in ratings and 214% in viewership from 2008 (0.3, 423K).

Of the first six telecasts, the two most-viewed were Spain/Italy on Sunday (2.113M) and Portugal/Germany on Saturday (1.798M).

Spain/Italy earned a larger audience than every single Euro 2008 telecast on ESPN/ESPN2 (the final on broadcast network ABC drew 3.760 million).

For some perspective, the UEFA Champions League Final on FOX attracted two million viewers in May. Last year’s MLS Cup on ESPN drew 1.039 million opposite NFL action.

Looks like soccer is no longer too far off hockey in the ratings. A few more years’ growth and promotion from the networks and they might be even.

Also i forgot to add that the friendly USA-Brazil game on ESPN 2 was followed by 1,125,000 viewers @ 8pm. That’s great considering it was up against the NBA on ESPN and the NHL Stanley Cup on NBC.
