NCAA Week 1: Subterranean Ratings For Debut of College Football on FOX

1

On a night of blowouts, FOX more like Hawaii or Michigan than USC or Alabama.

Saturday’s Hawaii/USC college football game drew a mere 1.4 overnight rating on FOX, according to Sports Business Daily. The game, won by USC by 39 points, marked the series debut of weekly college football games on the FOX broadcast network.

To put the 1.4 in perspective, the lowest overnight ever for ABC’s “Saturday Night Football” was a comparably solid 2.2.

Saturday’s game had to compete with a much stronger matchup (on paper) between #8 Michigan and #2 Alabama. That game, which was also a blowout, drew a 4.7 overnight on ABC.

Hawaii/USC also drew a lower overnight than Clemson/Auburn on cable network ESPN (2.2).

I was surprised Fox even aired that game, especially against Alabama/Michigan. Nebraska @ UCLA will provide a better barometer of how Fox can do in that timeslot, especially since ABC will be airing NASCAR.

I also wonder if having one national game will hurt. In the past, except for marquee matchups, ABC did regional coverage in primetime to boost ratings. I dont think they can do that this year with the new Pac-12 & Big 12 contracts.
