Overnights for Game 1 of the NLCS increased from last year, but declined compared to 2010. In other news, ESPN and ESPN2 had some big declines for college football over the weekend, and overnight ratings held steady for ABC’s lone NASCAR Chase For the Cup race.

  • Cards/Giants Overnight Up From Last Year, Down From ’10: Game 1 of the Cardinals/Giants National League Championship Series drew a 4.7 overnight rating on FOX Sunday night, up 21% from Tigers/Rangers Game 1 on a Saturday night last year (3.9), but down 10% from Giants/Phillies Game 1 on a Saturday night in 2010 (5.2). Compared to the last Sunday night LCS telecast on FOX, the 4.7 overnight marked a 28% decline from Giants/Phillies Game 2 in 2010 (6.5). (Weekend overnights from Sports Business Daily)
  • Big Declines For Iowa/MSU, BC/FSU: Saturday’s Noon ET Iowa/Michigan State college football game drew a 1.3 overnight rating on ESPN, down 64% from Michigan State/Michigan in the same window last year (3.6). Over on ESPN2, the concurrent Northwestern/Minnesota game scored a 0.5, down a tick from last year’s Indiana/Wisconsin game (0.6). Later in the day, Boston College/Florida State also drew a 0.5 overnight — down 58% from Alabama/Mississippi in a similar window last year (1.2). (Weekend numbers from Houston Chronicle)
  • Overnights Flat For NASCAR From Charlotte: Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race from Charlotte, the fifth race of the Chase For the Cup, drew a 3.0 overnight rating on ABC — even with last year (3.0), but up 3% from 2010 (2.9). The 3.0 is tied as the highest overnight of the 2012 Chase For the Cup, matching last week’s Talladega race on ESPN (3.0), and surpassing Dover (2.1), New Hampshire (2.2) and Chicago (2.5). Wow The rating went UP without Jr racing?? I thought the Jr fans said the ratings would be the lowest in history because without Jr racing no one would watch!! Looks they were as wrong as they could be! Maybe their St Jr is NOT the Lord of NASCAR like they say he is!!
