BCS: Rose Bowl Overnight Rating Declines For Third Straight Year

Overnight ratings for the Rose Bowl declined for a third straight year.

The Stanford/Wisconsin Rose Bowl earned a 9.6 overnight rating on ESPN Tuesday afternoon, down 3% from Oregon/Wisconsin last year (9.9), and down 18% from TCU/Wisconsin in 2011 (11.7).

The 9.6 overnight is the lowest for the Rose Bowl since at least 2001 (overnights prior to 2002 were not available). Overnight ratings for the Rose Bowl have now declined in each of the three years the game has aired on ESPN.

Final ratings for the Rose Bowl typically decline from the overnight. Last year was an exception, as the record-low 10.2 final rating for Oregon/Wisconsin marked a 3% increase over the 9.9 overnight. Barring a 7% increase from the overnight to the final this year, Stanford/Wisconsin will set a new record-low.

Locally, the Rose Bowl earned a 31.1 rating in Milwaukee and a 12.3 in the Bay Area.
