Accenture Match Play Overnights Drop; Third Straight Week of Declines For Golf

Continuing a three-week slump, overnight ratings declined by double-digits for both days of the Accenture Match Play Championship on NBC.

Coverage of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship earned a 1.9 overnight rating on NBC Sunday afternoon, down 24% from last year (2.5), but up a tick from 2011 (1.8).

The 1.9 is the third-lowest for Sunday coverage of the event over the past ten years, ahead of only 2011 and 2010 (1.3).

Saturday’s action earned a 1.4 overnight, down 18% from last year (1.7), and down 22% from 2011 (1.8).

After a good start to the season, the last six professional golf telecasts on broadcast TV have had double-digit declines in overnight ratings. Sunday telecasts in particular have declined by 43% (Pebble Beach), 37% (Northern Trust) and 24% (Accenture) over the past three weeks.

I wonder if NBC taking over from CBS has anything to do with the recent slide. One would think the obvious reason is Tiger not playing in any of the events minus 18 holes last week on Wed.
