Bulls/Lakers Overnight Up Despite Tiger Competition

The Lakers’ mediocre record and the absence of Derrick Rose took some luster from Sunday’s Bulls/Lakers clash, but the game still had a modest increase in overnights.

Sunday’s Bulls/Lakers NBA regular season game drew a 3.5 overnight rating on ABC, up 9% from Celtics/Lakers last year (3.2), and up 106% from Magic/Suns in 2011. Keep in mind the comparable games last year and in 2011 aired on college basketball’s Selection Sunday.

Bulls/Lakers held up well opposite tough competition from Tiger Woods‘ victory at the WGC-Cadillac Championship on NBC (4.4) and NASCAR’s Sprint Cup coverage on FOX (4.4).

Earlier in the day, Celtics/Thunder drew a 2.7 overnight, tying ABC’s lowest overnight of the season. There was no comparable game last year or in 2011.

Tiger Woods always delivers the ratings.

That Bulls/Lakers did bigger numbers than I expected but just imagine if D. Rose actually played in this game. I would love to see ABC air a Bulls/Lakers game each season with the next one at the UC next season. This match-up has always done well on a national level since the Jordan era so this should be a Finals match-up with Kobe last Finals against D. Rose.
