The 2013 Major League Baseball season got off to a slower start on ESPN Sunday night.
The Rangers/Astros Major League Baseball regular season game earned a 1.5 overnight rating on ESPN Sunday night — down 17% from both Cardinals/Marlins last year (1.8) and Dodgers/Giants in 2011 (1.8). Last year’s Cardinals/Marlins opener took place on a Wednesday night; the 2011 Dodgers/Giants game was on a Thursday night.
Compared to previous “Sunday Night Baseball” season debuts, the 1.5 overnight is up a tick from both Rangers/White Sox last year and Giants/Dodgers on ESPN2 in 2011 (1.4).
Locally, Sunday’s game drew a 5.6 rating in Dallas-Ft. Worth (down 34% from the Rangers’ “SNB” opener last year) and a 4.2 in Houston.
