The presence of the United States helped boost the Gold Cup final to a near record overnight rating on FOX.
The United States/Panama Gold Cup final earned a 1.7 overnight rating on FOX Sunday afternoon, the second-highest overnight ever for a soccer telecast on the network. Prior to this year, the Gold Cup final aired on Fox Soccer.
The only match to earn a higher overnight on FOX was the Manchester United/Barcelona UEFA Champions League final in 2011 (1.8).
Sunday’s match also earned the highest overnight of the year for a soccer telecast on an English-language network, topping the United States/Mexico friendly on ESPN in March (1.6) and the Brazil/Spain Confederations Cup final on ESPN in June (1.5).
The Gold Cup final earned the weekend’s second-largest overnight rating for any sporting event on broadcast, trailing only the final round of the PGA Tour RBC Canadian Open on CBS (1.8).
