One week after attracting big numbers against Michigan, Notre Dame was a far weaker draw against Purdue Saturday night.
The Notre Dame/Purdue “Saturday Night Football” game drew a 3.1 overnight rating on ABC, down 6% from Notre Dame/Michigan State last year (3.3), and down 49% from Oklahoma/Florida State in 2011 (6.1). The 3.1 is the lowest of the young season for the Saturday night game on ESPN or ABC, trailing Clemson/Georgia in Week 1 (5.0) and Notre Dame/Michigan in Week 2 (5.6).
Despite the lower numbers, Notre Dame/Purdue earned the second-highest college football overnight of the weekend on any network. Only Alabama/Texas A&M on CBS earned a higher overnight (9.0).
Earlier in the day, Tennessee/Oregon earned a 2.2 overnight — actually up 16% from regional action last year (1.9), but down 24% from 2011 (2.9). The game aired directly opposite Alabama/Texas A&M.
ABC also drew a 2.7 overnight for the Noon ET UCLA/Nebraska game, down 16% from both Cal/Ohio State last year (3.2) and Auburn/Clemson in 2011 (3.2).
