U.S. Women’s Open Up Big in Overnights, Tops PGA

With Michelle Wie winning her first major, overnight ratings soared for the U.S. Women’s Open.

Final round coverage of the U.S. Women’s Open earned a 1.7 overnight rating on NBC, up 89% from both last year and 2012 (0.9) and the highest overnight for final round coverage since 2007 (1.9).

Despite the multi-year high, the 1.7 overnight still ranks just 11th out of the past 18 final round telecasts of the event (dating back to 1997). It was just eight years ago that final round coverage of Annika Sörenstam‘s final victory there earned a 3.1 overnight.

The final round outdrew competing coverage of the PGA Tour Travelers Championship on CBS (1.2) and was the top non-World Cup sporting event of the weekend on broadcast.

Third round coverage on Saturday earned a 1.2 overnight, up 71% from last year (0.7) and up 50% from 2012 (0.8). Saturday coverage also topped the PGA on CBS (0.9).
