Daily Digest
DDEvery day, a lot of sportswriters, talking heads, and sports media “professionals” say a lot of stuff. Mostly, it’s crap. As if the seventy-second column on your team’s free agency prospects is really going to tell you something new. What you need is a quick-fix look at the day’s sports media, and you need it annotated, opinionated, and funny as hell. Your TPS reports have suffered long enough.

That’s what the Daily Digest is here for. Matt Gaventa provides your one-stop destination for the day-to-day ramblings of the sports media universe. What are we obsessing with? What’s getting left behind? What small country did ESPN buy today? This is the news you need about the media you use, Monday through Friday and always on guard.

DDHere at Sports Media Watch, we've been known to say occasionally disparaging things about sportswriters. But for today, we're granting a specific reprieve: Bob Rohwer, staff writer for The Los Angeles Times, you have our blessing. Rowher, to our knowledge, is the first journalist to cite Sports Media Watch in print (in today's Morning Briefing). He mentions our very own John Weaver and his article on the worst lacrosse team in the country. To Bob, and to the Rams of Wilmington (Del.) Dickinson High School, we raise a toast: you've come to the right place.

And now that you're here: make sure to stick around for this weekend's Super Bowl media coverage, and our forthcoming journey into the cavelike depths of NBC's Olympics mania.

DDYes, it’s the Super Bowl, and yes, there’s a lot of sports media everywhere. Which means some of the smaller stories – you know, the stuff that doesn’t involve Jerome Bettis’ high school – can fall through the cracks. So today’s digest will be (largely) Super Bowl-free – ‘cause we know you’re getting plenty on the side, anyway.

DDVery quietly over the weekend, the NFL formalized the announcement that it was retaining the coveted late-season eight-game package that Comcast had been eyeing for some time. The announcement came via a New York Times story on Saturday, and has percolated around the mainstream media in a quiet sports weekend. But coverage has left many, many dots unconnected, so let’s get right to the meat of the matter.

DDIt’s been one of those days where we all look at how overlooked a story is: in this case, it’s poor Kobe Bryant, whose 81-point gem Sunday night has been followed by a long chorus of sportswriters complaining about how overlooked it was. But let’s overlook that for just a moment; we’ve got bigger and more substantial hypocrisies at play today, and they revolve around one of sports media’s former powerhouses, The Sporting News.

DDToday is the day in the Digest when we analyze and speculate about largely unsubstantiated rumors. Two quick hits for your Wednesday, and they both involve (surprise surprise) the NFL throwing its massive weight around. We’ve got to tackle this rumor that the NFL has handed late-season broadcast rights to its own NFL Network. But first, let’s talk GoDaddy … again.
