Below the Fold
DD Jay-Z.  Al Pacino.  Carrot Top.  Five years ago, the only way you would find these names in the sports section is if the crossword were alongside.  Nowadays, column inches, big-money TV, and seemingly unending web content are devoted to the intersection between sports and entertainment. It's getting harder and harder to tell the difference.

Which is where we come in. Every Wednesday, Patrick J. Byrnett looks at what makes this semi-sports media important, and why we canít stop reading and watching it. Welcome to Below the Fold, where Page 2 is always #1 in our hearts.

Sports Media Watch Below the FoldIt was a disappointing weekend for men’s basketball fans, and the readers of my beloved semi-sports media.  After a hot first week of writing and blogging, our Semi-Sports Elite Eight limped their way to the finish.  Oh, sure, we’ll have a champion, don’t you worry about that.  But to get there, we need to sort through the flotsam of writers who simply gave up caring about the most exciting event in American sports.

Sports Media Watch Below the FoldMonday night, through the wonder of TiVo, I tuned into Through the Fire, the latest feature-length film appearing on your cable courtesy of ESPN Original Entertainment.  I tuned in looking for answers to question about inner city hoops and the influences a young man faces as he’s deciding his future.  By the time I turned the TV off, I had more questions than I did going in … but now, the questions are for ESPN.

Sports Media Watch Below the FoldThis is the true story of several media sources, designed to nitpick, tear down, and ultimately find humor in the sporting world, picked to opine about a serious subject for once, to find out what happens when they stop having fun, and start getting real.  It’s not The Real World.  It’s just the semi-sports media doing what it does best – highlighting the fan’s perspective … be it disgust or delight … of the latest news about Barry Bonds.

DDIf you were a store owner, wouldn’t you do your best to carry all of the products which were most heavily demanded by your customers?  Of course you would.  Now, let’s say that, for no reason but your own laziness, you simply don’t carry one of the top five demanded goods of your customers.  Wouldn't you think that was a bit irresponsible, a bit unsympathetic towards your clientele?  Again, of course you would.  Unfortunately, that scenario is exactly what's happening with the semi-sports media, which inexcusably refuses to care about NASCAR.
