Below the Fold
DD Jay-Z.  Al Pacino.  Carrot Top.  Five years ago, the only way you would find these names in the sports section is if the crossword were alongside.  Nowadays, column inches, big-money TV, and seemingly unending web content are devoted to the intersection between sports and entertainment. It's getting harder and harder to tell the difference.

Which is where we come in. Every Wednesday, Patrick J. Byrnett looks at what makes this semi-sports media important, and why we canít stop reading and watching it. Welcome to Below the Fold, where Page 2 is always #1 in our hearts.

DDThis week, in Below the Fold: another review! What, are reviews all that I write these days? First CodeBreakers, then Sports Guy’s book, and now another one?  I think our esteemed editor is punishing me for my long holiday break.  Well, no, actually, it’s just that our friends at Deadspin beat me to an NFL playoff blog review.  Ah well. Second choice or no, Glory Road is a worthy subject…if only so we can ask, how did Disney screw this up?

DD[yawn]….wait, it’s January?  January what?  Jeez, that gravy coma (thanks Mom!) must have been deeper than I thought.  Not to worry – the holiday provided plenty of opportunities to enjoy things I’ve already enjoyed.  In December, it was Spike’s 008 Days of 007, an annual treat for Bond buffs like me.  And in January, it was Now I Can I Die in Peace, the carelessly edited but still enjoyable volume of columns by ESPN’s Sports Guy, Bill Simmons.

DDYou know, BTF has always dreamed about going into the Navy.  When I was young, I wanted to enlist and serve on boats like Grandpa did.  As a teenager, I wanted to head to Annapolis for school … never mind my established “weenie” status.  Now that I’m in law school, the daydream is nothing more than looking good in JAG whites.  So maybe that’s why I hated CodeBreakers … nothing but stupid Army kids.  Or maybe it’s just because the movie stinks.

DDI’ll admit, I never could get into blogging.  Online journal?  Too personal.  Political commentary?  There isn’t enough Zoloft in the world.  But even if I can’t stand writing a blog, I still read them constantly, and the sports blog world never disappoints.  So maybe its time to throw these “new media” journalists into the semi-sports media as well, and see what good and ill they bring to our sports diet.  And the BCS bowl announcements seem like a great place to start.

DDAh, the holiday season: turkey with all the usual sides of shopping, travel, and stress.  If there was ever a time when readers needed the Semi-Sports Media to provide them with a few laughs, this has to be it.  Give us co-eds getting drunk at parties in prep for bowl games.  Give us mobile strip clubs.  Heck, just give us bears on trampolines. The problem is, the humor in the semi-sports media isn’t what it used to be.
