Aided by the presence of Serena Williams on Saturday and college basketball fans on Sunday, tennis’ Sony Open had big gains in television ratings last weekend.

After five years of rain-induced postponements, the United States Tennis Association has elected to change the schedule for the U.S. Open singles finals.

In a turnaround from the overnight ratings released earlier in the week, final numbers for the singles finals of the U.S. Open increased slightly from last year.

Airing in the afternoon on a workday for the fifth consecutive year, it should not be a shock that overnight ratings were unimpressive for the men’s final of the U.S. Open.

Though largely attributable to an NFL lead-in, the women’s final of the U.S. Open earned solid numbers for CBS Sunday afternoon.

CBS Sports will go in-house to replace Dick Enberg on U.S. Open coverage.

Additional sports TV ratings, including the U.S. Open Men’s Final, the 2011 WNBA Playoffs, and the Kansas City Royals on Fox Sports Kansas City.

Recent sports TV ratings news, including the World Track and Field Championships on NBC, the Summer of Saratoga horse racing series, and terrible numbers for the final of the U.S. Open Series Winston Salem Open.
