- After two years, the CBC will not be returning as a broadcaster for Toronto Blue Jays games. The Canadian network cites “a drop in revenue, coupled with the cost of TV rights” for the decision to drop Blue Jays telecasts. The CBC spent $3.6 million on Blue Jays telecasts last season. The “24 games that CBC carried last season” will now be televised by Rogers SportsNet.
- NHL attendance is up 2% from last year, with teams averaging 17,306 fans per game. The Chicago Blackhawks lead the league in attendance with 22,604 fans per game, up 49% from last year. Keep in mind that the Blackhawks’ attendance is inflated by the Winter Classic at Wrigley Field. As of Saturday, the NHL is leading the NBA in attendance by 2%.
- ESPN2 will add some new wrinkles for its first year covering all four tennis Grand Slams. The network will use new graphics, new music and a new scoreboard for its Grand Slam tennis coverage, which kicks off with the Australian Open.
