Mere hours after the death of Norm Van Lier, another notable name in the NBA and Chicago Bulls family has passed away.
Johnny ‘Red’ Kerr, three-time NBA All-Star and the inaugural coach of the Chicago Bulls, died on Thursday at the age of 76. Kerr was perhaps best known as a color commentator on Chicago Bulls broadcasts, a role he held since 1975.
Kerr broadcast the “first seven or eight games this season” before having to curtail his schedule due to prostate cancer. On February 10, Kerr was honored at halftime by the Chicago Bulls.
Kerr’s death completes a dark day in Chicago Bulls history. Earlier Thursday, former Bull and fellow Bulls broadcaster Norm Van Lier unexpectedly died at age 61. Kerr’s death also follows the passing of Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller, who died last week at age 64.
