Colorado’s oldest newspaper is the latest victim of the crumbling economy.
The Rocky Mountain News will publish its final edition on Friday, after parent company Scripps was unable to find a buyer for the paper. Last December, Scripps announced it was looking for a buyer for the paper, as “it couldn’t continue to sustain its financial losses in Denver.” The Rocky Mountain News lost $16 million in 2008.
Rumors about the paper’s fate had been “swirling throughout the newsroom for weeks but reached a peak Thursday morning. A few minutes after 11, staffers began congregating in small groups waiting for the announcement we dreaded.”
Founded in 1859, the Rocky Mountain News was one of two major newspapers in Denver, along with the Denver Post. The end of the Rocky Mountain News comes just two months before the paper’s 150th anniversary.
