The National Football League is on the verge of eight-year contract extensions with broadcast networks FOX, CBS, and NBC.
Industry publication Sports Business Journal reported Monday that the NFL “is close” to extending its television deals with FOX, CBS and NBC through the 2021-22 season.
The current television deals are set to expire after the 2013-14 season.
The three networks would pay the NFL at least $1 billion each for rights, contributing to an expected $7 billion/year media rights pot by the 2014-15 season. The league earned $4.28 billion/year under the previous media deals (sportsbusinessdaily.com, 12/5).
Under the new deals, CBS, FOX would gain the right to offer NFL games on tablet devices, and NBC could potentially utilize flexible scheduling earlier in the season.
