MLB players’ union leader Michael Weiner has died after a battle with cancer. In other news, CBS NFL broadcaster Dan Dierdorf will retire at the end of the season, and Bob Costas will anchor both primetime and late night coverage of next year’s Olympics.
MLBPA Exec. Director Weiner Passes Away
- Major League Baseball Players Association executive director Michael Weiner has died of brain cancer at age 51. Weiner led the union since 2009, replacing predecessor Don Fehr. During his tenure, the players and owners reached agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement that lasts through December of 2016. (ESPN.com)
Dierdorf to Retire From Broadcasting
- CBS Sports NFL analyst Dan Dierdorf announced earlier this week that he will retire at the end of the season. Dierdorf is currently in his second stint with CBS, having rejoined the network in 1999. He is perhaps best known for his tenure on ABC’s “Monday Night Football” — working alongside Al Michaels and Frank Gifford from 1987-97 and Michaels and Boomer Esiason in 1998. (CBS Sports)
Costas to Add Late Night Olympic Hosting Duties
- NBC Sports has named Bob Costas the host of the network’s primetime and late night coverage of the Winter Olympics, marking the first time since 2000 — and only the third time ever — that Costas has anchored the late night window.
