Continuing an offseason of change, CBS announced several changes to its NFL announcing teams.
CBS Sports announced Tuesday that Ian Eagle and Dan Fouts will ascend to the network’s #2 NFL broadcast team this season. The previous #2 team was Greg Gumbel and the now retired Dan Dierdorf. With the lead NFL team of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms focusing primarily on Thursday night games, Eagle and Fouts will work the top Sunday game several times during the season.
Gumbel will work games this season with newcomer Trent Green on the #3 CBS team. His role on the NFL on CBS has been continually diminished over the past decade — recall that he called the Super Bowl for CBS in 2004.
With Marv Albert leaving CBS NFL coverage, Kevin Harlan will work games with Albert’s old partner Rich Gannon this season. Spero Dedes will work with Harlan’s former partner Solomon Wilcots. Finally, Andrew Catalon will work in a three-man booth with Steve Beuerlein and Steve Tasker.
CBS already announced plans to add sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson to the lead NFL team of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms. The network will use two other sideline reporters throughout the season, Evan Washburn and Jenny Dell.
All of those changes are in addition to the months-old retooling of The NFL Today, which replaced Dan Marino and Shannon Sharpe with Tony Gonzalez and Bart Scott. Overall, CBS — the perennial third-place NFL network — has undergone one of the largest offseason rebuilds in recent memory.
