ESPN and Univision both set records for Tuesday’s lopsided World Cup semifinal.
The Germany/Brazil FIFA World Cup semifinal earned a combined 12.4 million viewers across ESPN and Univision, with both networks setting viewership records.
The ESPN telecast earned a 4.2 U.S. rating and 6.6 million viewers, up 56% in ratings and 58% in viewership from Netherlands/Uruguay in 2010 (2.7, 4.2M), and the network’s highest rated and most-watched World Cup semifinal ever. The previous highs were a 3.4 and 5.9 million for Italy/Germany in 2006.
The match also ranks as the highest rated and most-viewed World Cup match ever on ESPN or ESPN2 that did not involve the United States, topping the previous highs set by the Netherlands/Mexico Round of 16 match (4.0, 6.6M).
Univision earned 5.8 million viewers for its coverage, also setting a record for its most-watched World Cup semifinal. The previous mark was set by Spain/Germany in 2010.
Overall, Germany/Brazil ranks as the sixth-most watched match of the 2014 World Cup, trailing the four USA matches and Netherlands/Mexico.
