In a Grand Slam that lacks the cachet of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, and against an opponent who lacks the appeal of a Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer did not attract a huge audience for his record tying 14th Grand Slam victory.
The Men’s Final at the French Open, featuring Federer’s straight set victory over Robin Soderling, drew a 1.8/5 overnight rating on NBC Sunday morning. The 1.8 is even with last year’s comparable Federer/Nadal final, but down 18% from a 2.2/6 for Federer/Nadal in ’07.
The 1.8 overnight is tied as the lowest of the decade for the French Open Men’s Final.
Keep in mind that the 1.8 overnight rating encompasses NBC’s coverage from 9 AM-2 PM. The Federer/Soderling final ended before 12 PM.
The Svetlana Kuznetsova/Dinara Safina Women’s Final drew a 1.4/4 overnight on Saturday morning, down 22% from a 1.8/6 for Ana Ivanovic‘s victory over Safina last year, and tied as the lowest overnight of the decade for the French Open Women’s Final.
