Ratings for the final round of the British Open were the highest since Tiger Woods last won the event.
Final round coverage of the 2009 British Open, featuring Stewart Cink‘s playoff victory over Tom Watson, drew a 3.8/12 final rating on ABC Sunday afternoon — up 15% from a 3.3/10 last year, and up 3% from a 3.7/12 in ’07. The 3.8 rating is the highest for the event since ’06, when Woods’ victory drew a 4.6/14.
Despite the increase, the 3.8 rating is the fourth-lowest for the final round of the British Open in the past 15 years.
The 3.8 marks the fifth-highest rating of the year for a golf telecast, behind third and final round coverage of The Masters (5.3 and 8.3, respectively), Sunday coverage of the U.S. Open (4.7), the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational (4.4), and the final round of the AT&T National (4.2).
Third round coverage on Saturday drew a 2.4/7 rating, even with last year.
