Truly amazing numbers for an April regular season baseball game.
Somehow, Yankees/Red Sox on Sunday night — in mid April with nothing on the line — managed to pull in the most viewers for a Sunday Night Baseball broadcast ever. This, even though the Yankees and Red Sox have not met in the playoffs for two years and neither team has even won a playoff series in the same span of time.
The game drew 5.5 million viewers — the same amount that watched the Lakers and Heat play on Christmas last year — and will likely end up being the most watched sporting event of the entire weekend outside of NASCAR. That includes broadcast and cable.
According to ESPN, the game was also the most watched baseball regular season broadcast since Mark McGwire hit his 61st home run. That game aired in primetime on FOX.
Next weekend, the Yankees and Red Sox play again, this time at Yankee Stadium. It will be interesting to see if the large numbers can be maintained.
