The Mexican national team continues to deliver big numbers for Univision.
Thursday’s Mexico/Jamaica Copa America group play match drew 5.4 million viewers across Univision and Univision Deportes Network, the largest audience for any soccer match since last year’s Gold Cup final. The previous high was 5.1 million for Mexico’s opening match against Uruguay last Saturday.
The English-language telecast on Fox Sports 1 scored a 0.4 final rating and 779,000 viewers, including 15 minutes of pre-match coverage. It was not immediately clear whether the Univision numbers included the pre-match window.
For the night, Mexico’s win was the top sporting event on any network, topping Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on NBC (5.0M). It was television’s top program in adults 18-49, with its 3.1 million viewers in the demo translating into an approximate 2.4 rating.
Earlier in the night, Uruguay/Venezuela scored 2.1 million viewers on Univision/UDN and a 0.3 and 589,000 on Fox Sports 1.
Through Thursday, Copa America has averaged 2.8 million viewers on the Univision networks. Comparable averages for last year’s Copa America on beIN Sports en Espanol were not available. The tournament is trending 7% ahead of Univision’s average for the 2014 World Cup group stage.
In other Copa America action, the FOX broadcast network scored a 0.6 final rating and 1.0 million viewers for Jamaica/Venezuela last Sunday and a 0.5 and 731,000 for Costa Rica/Paraguay the previous day. Tournament-to-date averages were not immediately available for Fox Sports.
