A beloved voice in Major League Baseball has been silenced.
Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell, who spent 42 years as the play-by-play voice of the Detroit Tigers, died on Tuesday at age 92. Harwell had been suffering from cancer.
Harwell joined the Tigers in 1960, after spending previous years broadcasting games for the Dodgers, Giants and Orioles. He would remain with the team through 2002, save for a brief period in the 1990s.
Harwell also called games nationally during his career, including the 1963 World Series on the radio.
Last year, Harwell announced that he had inoperable cancer. In the months following, he made several public appearances, including a speech to the fans at the Tigers’ Comerica Park and an interview with Bob Costas on MLB Network.
