The first full week of the Olympics concluded with yet another decline from four years ago
Primetime coverage of the Rio Summer Olympics earned a 17.4 overnight rating on NBC Sunday night, down 11% from London in 2012 (19.5) and down 9% from Beijing in 2008 (19.1). Compared to the same night of the Sochi Winter Olympics, overnights jumped 32% from a 13.2.
Overnights peaked at a 21.4 from 9:15-9:30 PM ET, as Usain Bolt competed in the men’s 100m. That was a full point higher the previous night’s peak of 20.4, during Michael Phelps‘ final race. Keep in mind Sunday is a much stronger night for ratings than Saturday, the lowest rated night of the week.
Sunday’s figures do not include concurrent primetime coverage on NBCSN (0.75) or Bravo (0.8).
Salt Lake City was NBC’s top market with a 20.5 rating, after falling out the top five the previous day. Rounding out the top five were Austin, TX (20.2), Columbus, OH (19.9), Richmond, VA (19.9) and Denver (19.7).
