The FIFA Confederations Cup got off to a slower start than four years ago.
Sunday’s Mexico-Portugal FIFA Confederations Cup match delivered 2.4 million viewers on Telemundo, down 23% from Mexico’s first match of the 2013 tournament against Italy, which aired on UniMas in a later time slot (3.1M). Figures are for the ‘match window’ and do not include pre-match coverage.
The Spanish-language telecast delivered 1.4 million viewers in the adults 18-49 demographic, down 30% from Mexico-Italy four years ago (2.0M) but the most-watched sporting event of the weekend in the demo. The final round of the U.S. Open had 1.3 million.
Overall, Telemundo averaged 1.3 million viewers for the opening weekend of play, down 28% from coverage on Univision in 2013 (1.8M) but up 188% from 2009.
On Fox Sports 1, Mexico-Portugal delivered a 0.3 final rating and 485,000 viewers — down 40% in ratings and 37% in viewership from 2013 on ESPN (0.5, 771K). FS1 also earned 159,000 viewers for Cameroon-Chile later in the day (-77%) and 253,000 for Saturday’s Russia-New Zealand opener (-45%). The 2013 matches aired in later telecast windows.
Moving into the workweek, Monday’s Australia-Germany match pulled 157,000 on FS1 — down 32% from Tahiti-Nigeria on ESPN in 2013, which had a later time slot (231K). Numbers for the same match on Telemundo were not available. Figures for all FS1 matches include pre-match coverage.
