Fox Sports no doubt expected Jay Cutler to listen to NFL overtures, though perhaps not this soon.
Cutler has signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, ESPN reported Sunday, ending his run with Fox three weeks before his scheduled debut. The former Bears QB signed with Fox in May and was to serve as an analyst on the network’s #2 broadcast team alongside Charles Davis and play-by-play voice Kevin Burkhardt.
At the time he joined Fox, Cutler said his move to the broadcast booth would be “permanent.” However, there was little doubt he would be mentioned in rumors for QB openings all season. Fox was prepared for the possibility Cutler would leave, hence the promotion of veteran analyst Davis, but one imagines the network expected him to actually call a game or two beforehand.
Cutler was Fox Sports’ second choice to fill the vacancy on its #2 team left after John Lynch‘s departure earlier in the year. Its first choice, Tony Romo, joined CBS as that network’s lead analyst.
