An uninteresting Super Bowl hit a ten-year low in the overnight ratings.
Sunday’s Patriots-Rams Super Bowl 53 earned a 44.9 overnight rating on CBS, down 5% from Eagles-Patriots on NBC last year (47.4) and down 8% from Patriots-Falcons on FOX in 2017 (48.8).
The 44.9 is the lowest Super Bowl overnight in a decade (2009 Steelers-Cardinals: 42.1). The previous low over that span was a 46.4 for Saints-Colts in 2010.
Since hitting a record-high 49.7 for Patriots-Seahawks in 2015, Super Bowl overnights have declined in each subsequent year.
Compared to the previous Patriots-Rams Super Bowl in 2002, overnights increased 6% from a 42.5. Despite the ten-year low, Sunday’s overnight topped every Super Bowl from 1988-2008.
Of the nine Super Bowl appearances by Tom Brady‘s Patriots, this year’s game ranks fourth.
Patriots-Rams marked just the third of 11 NFL playoff telecasts to decline from last year. Overnights also fell for the Rams-Saints NFC Championship (-1%) and Chargers-Patriots in the Divisional Round (-6%). It should be noted that the Rams-Saints game finished with an increase in the final nationals.
Per Deadline, Sunday’s game peaked with a 47.3 from 9:30-10 PM ET. Last year’s game peaked at a 52.2 and the 2017 game peaked at a 52.1.
