TNT NBA broadcaster Marv Albert has officially joined CBS Sports as a play-by-play voice for the network’s NFL coverage.
CBS Sports announced Monday that Albert will join the network as a play-by-play voice for NFL coverage, filling a vacancy left by Gus Johnson. Albert will continue calling NBA action for TNT, as well as the NCAA Tournament on CBS and Turner.
Though perhaps best known for his work as the lead play-by-play voice of the NBA on NBC (1990-97, 2001-02) and TNT (1999-present), Albert also has a long history covering the NFL.
From 2002 to 2010, he was the voice of Monday Night Football and the Super Bowl for Westwood One radio. His most recent NFL assignment was the Saints/Colts Super Bowl.
He also called NFL action during his initial tenure with NBC. The last time he called an NFL game on television was the Steelers/Patriots AFC Divisional Round game on NBC in January 1997.
FOX pursued Albert as an NFL voice in 1999, a move proved to be the driving force behind NBC rehiring him for NBA and Olympic coverage. At the time, then-FOX Sports executive producer Ed Goren said “it’s the only time I’ve lost out in a negotiation and felt good. Marv is going back where he belongs” (USA Today, 7/2/99).
